Driving From Wisconsin... travel weather/flooding in May?

We are driving from Wisconsin to Rapid City in mid-May. Just wondering what to expect weather wise? Possible snow?

Also have been hearing a lot about the flooding in Fargo, ND. Is it possible this might cause problems for us? Is there flooding in SD too?

Are the state/national parks open mid May?

TIA

By May flooding would not be an issue....except in the rare event of a large thunderstorm complex dropping many inches of rain. At that (agan, rare) event would be very local. The flooding at Fargo and points north are related to the Red River flowing from south (where it warms up and melts earlier) toward north where it is still cold and frozen...causing the water to back up. By May all the snow will be gone in Eastern SD so no worries. The surge of water causing flodding at Bismark, ND heading down the Missouri will have passed (or been absorbed in lakes behind the dams). Even the James River in Mitchell should be a non-issue.

Snow in the Black Hills would not be real common that late in May but not unheard of. Better chance for cold rain and wind...especially on the western side of Black Hills in Wyoming. Zonal weather patterns in May often mean Rapid City is toasty warm from downslope winds.

All the major tourist sites would be open. Not sure about some of the more seasonal commercial sites but by then even those too should be open.

Nice thing about the drive at that time is everything should be very green and lush unlike the brown/yellows of late August.
