road trip from vegas to deadwood

We want to drive from vegas to deadwood. What we need to know is,what is there to see between the two city%26#39;s?

We would like to pan for gold or something like that.

We have about 11 day%26#39;s to kick around in the third week of May.

Deadwood is a neat town with saloons, some gambling and the famous cemetery but we were there for the day in June 2009 and I didn%26#39;t see much else to do. If you have 11 days then why not think about seeing Yellowstone or the Black Hills area of SD.

Thank%26#39;s for the reply,we will do the parks and mt.rushmoore. More interested in what is to be seen between vegas and deadwood.

If you are driving from Las Vegas then I would go to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone then out east entrance toward Deadwood then down to Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. The drive straight from Las Vegas to Deadwood will take you by many of the national parks in Utah, Salt Lake City, and Cheyenne. In Southern Wyoming and eastern Wyoming you will find not many towns and long stretches of farm and ranch land. We did the Las Vegas to YNP trip in 2007 (after doing the Grand Canyon) and the Black Hills and YNP, Cody and Cheyenne trip in 2008.

Beware the third week of May that the weather can either be beautiful and spring like or cold and snowing. In 2007 the last week of May it was beautiful and warm but in 2008 the last week of May was cold, icy and snowing.

In 2007 May might have been nice but first week of June we ran into near blizzard whiteout between Cheyenne and Laramie and had to delay driving into Medicine Bow Mts. due to road closure. This drive between gambling destinations will itself be a gamble.

With that much time I think I would be inclined to take I-15 up past Zion and Bryce Canyon Nat. Parks then at I-70 make a choice:

Southern Route:

I-70 past Arches NP and Colorado Nat. Mon. to Denver )with stop at Glenwood Springs for soak in the HUGE hot springs pool. Glenwood Canyon I-70 stretch is an engineering marvel. Stop in Denver (maybe even visit Colorado%26#39;s versions of Deadwood (gambling towns in the Rockies). Then up to Cheyenne and side trip via I-80 over night to Saratoga, WY (more great hot springs) then up to I-80 and over to I-25 north to US 20 to Lusk and on up to the Black Hills for touring around there.

Northern Route:

Stay on I-15 to Salt Lake City (visit sights there) and then I-80 with visit to Flaming Gorge and on over to Saratoga for a night. Too bad Snowy Range Pass will probably still be closed for winter then but if it is open and weather cooperates don%26#39;t miss it. Then to Cheyenne and route as with Southern version above.

Definitely LOTS to see and eleven days is a nice amount of time.

Thank%26#39;s for all the tips. Hope for good weather.

Keep the tips and ideas coming.

We are traveling from Maryland to Deadwood and then on the Medford, OR. Just from looking at the map we decided there seems to be a lot do to in Wyoming, especially in Chyenne - walking tours - shows. We also plan to stop by Salt Lake City - there is Salt Lake Park right off of a major interstate, and we want to see just how salty the lake really is. Our route will also take us by Reno - we have been there and that%26#39;s definitely not our favoriate place but we want to stay on major roads. For your best bet be sure to check out Wyoming its an ';old west place';.
