Mt Rushmore Caves & YSNP in 5 days

We plan to fly into Bozeman fr Seattle, drive up to Mt Rushmore %26amp; Jewel Caves, where to stay a night or so and then to Yellowstone NP. Kindly advise if this is a good route, what%26#39;s the drive time fr Bozeman to Mt R %26amp; Caves, and to N entrance of YSNP.

Thank you in advance!

It%26#39;s over 500 miles from Bozeman to Rapid City near Mt. Rushmore. That will eat up nearly a full day just driving there. From there back to Yellowstone is nearly 500 miles, again eating up nearly a full day. It%26#39;s possible, but I%26#39;m not sure I would want to do it. If you like to hike at all, want to see the sights in Yellowstone and enjoy the animals, you could easily spend all 5 days in Yellowstone and not see it all. If you wanted more to do in that area, take a trip down to Grand Tetons, a much shorter drive and a beautiful area to see.

If you must see Mt. Rushmore and Jewel Cave, can you fly into Rapid City? There are enough attractions in that part of South Dakota to take up all 5 days.

You are right, less is probably more. I have looked at the great pictures of Mt R and Crazy Horse etc on google images, and personally visited amazing caves at New Zealand, guess I%26#39;d have to give up SD so as to have more time at YSNP.

Hi

I agree with RM. You really don%26#39;t have time for both, unfortunately. There are many people who combine Yellowstone and the Black Hills of SD in one trip,but they usually have 2 weeks or more. You really need this much time to do both areas justice.

There are some wonderful sights in SD, but since you are flying into Bozeman, you will be closer to Yellowstone (about 80 miles to the north entrance outside Gardiner). I%26#39;d focus on this area and try to take a day to see the Tetons, which are amazing in their own right. The Tetons are a gorgeous mountain range--one of the very best our country has to offer.

When you have more time, please come back to see the sights of SD. The Black Hills offers around a dozen or so caves, many of them privately owned, so just those alone can keep a person busy. There%26#39;s so much more, including state parks, national parks, monuments, and ';roadside Americana.';

Thanks for both your suggestions. I agree that USA has so much to offer in sights and experiences. We will definite return many more times to cover them!

I%26#39;m really curious TrueSingaporean, what your whole trip is like. I know you were planning to go to YNP and a bunch of National Parks, but your latest posts on the WA forum mentioned an Alaska cruise.

I%26#39;m glad to see these fine people on the SD forum agree with those of us further west that doing these long drives doesn%26#39;t add up to a fun vacation. I%26#39;m also happy you%26#39;re taking their advice!

If your agenda is to go on a cruise, then visit Seattle and fly to Bozeman to visit Yellowstone, I think we%26#39;d all say that sounds like a good doable plan.

You are wise to limit yourself a bit and plan to come back. There is a lot to see!

One day we%26#39;ll get to Singapore and need your help, too.

We are planning to spend about 3 weeks in BC %26amp; USA, the Alaska cruise takes up a week and the rest we intend to cover Vancouver, Seattle, YSNP and you know the rest of the story. As a matter of fact, I have been listening to so many good advice from the different posts and made several changes to my itineraries, sometimes to the effect of incurring penalty charges for cancellations and amendments. The time I put in doing homework for these trips is unimaginable. So thank you all for your suggestions.
