Camping trip from southern Wisconsin to Rapid City

While we are waiing for our travel info to arrive from the South Dakota Dept of Tourism I was hoping we could get some help on this forum.

My wife, 19 yr.old son and 16 yr. old daughter and I will be making a trip in early July, pulling our pop-up camper from southern Wisconsin, eventually ending up near Rapid City at a campground where we can spend 3 or 4 days taking siteseeing trips from there.

I have a childhood friend that has lived in Rapid City for about 10 yrs. or so now and can help us with ideas of things to do once we get to Rapid City.

What we need help with is finding a campground between our home and Rapid City to spend a night at. I don%26#39;t want to yank the camper all the way to Rapid City in one day. We%26#39;d like to have someshade and a pool at the campground. If someone else has done a similar trip across Minnespta from Wisconsin and can give a god suggestion on a campground not far off the interstate that would be great.

Was wondering if it would be possible to find an inexpensive cabin to rent somewhere between here and there for a night, possibly at a campground, then we wouldn%26#39;t have to unload all of our stuff and set up the camper just for one night. May stay here on the way home too.

If anyone has a campground recommendation of a good campground near Rapid City with things to do and keep the kids busy that would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked into the campgrounds in Custer State Park?

Not yet, thanks.

Just received my travel pkg. from South Dakota today. Is there decent spots to camp and things for older teens to do at Custer?

While we haven%26#39;t camped in CSP, we%26#39;ve stayed in a cabin and the park is one of our favorites. The wildlife loop is great-buffalo, pronghorn, mountain goats, deer, etc. There are lakes and hiking. It%26#39;s also central to hitting all the attractions in the area in Custer, Hill City, Keystone and Rapid City. As far as a place to camp nearby to Rapid City, I don%26#39;t think you could go wrong.

Do you remember how much the price of the cabins were?

Hi there...this is Wanda from the SD Office of Tourism. If you%26#39;re looking for a nice campground/cabin on your way to Rapid City, here are a couple of options: Palisades State Park near Garretson is about 10 miles north of I-90 and features some really unique terrain. Cost is $12 for a non-electrical site and $16 for electrical. If you%26#39;d rather stay in a cabin, each cabin sleeps 4 and is $35 per night. Here%26#39;s the website: sdgfp.info/Parks/…Palisades.htm.

If you want to make it a little farther that first day, there%26#39;s a nice KOA campground near Mitchell, which is just another hour or so down I-90. Or, the Cedar Shore Resort near Chamberlain also offers a campground, and you%26#39;d be about half-way through SD if you stayed there for the night. Hoewver, there are no cabins. The website is: www.cedarshore.com/campground/index.htm.

I hope this helps...have a fun trip!

The cabins at the resorts in Custer State Park are pricier. We%26#39;re paying $130 for a 2 bedroom with a bath and tv. A bigger cabin with kitchen facilities is around $165. Here is the link to those:

However, there are also ';camping cabins'; at the campground in the park that appear to only be $45/night:

As Wanda mentioned, Palisades State Park might be a great place for your first night. We%26#39;ve been there twice but haven%26#39;t stayed overnight. Beautiful park.

Thanks much Wanda and librarychick,

Palisides looks perfect, but the website Wanda had listed doesn%26#39;t come up so I will google it. A camping cabin there should be just what we need.

Wanda%26#39;s link is right, but it has a period added to the end.
