Nedd help for camping trip from southern WI to Rapid City

I posted this on the South Dakota forum also.

While we are waiing for our travel info to arrive from the South Dakota Dept of Tourism I was hoping we could get some help on this forum.

My wife, 19 yr.old son and 16 yr. old daughter and I will be making a trip in early July, pulling our pop-up camper from southern Wisconsin, eventually ending up near Rapid City at a campground where we can spend 3 or 4 days taking siteseeing trips from there.

I have a childhood friend that has lived in Rapid City for about 10 yrs. or so now and can help us with ideas of things to do once we get to Rapid City.

What we need help with is finding a campground between our home and Rapid City to spend a night at. I don%26#39;t want to yank the camper all the way to Rapid City in one day. We%26#39;d like to have someshade and a pool at the campground. If someone else has done a similar trip across Minnespta from Wisconsin and can give a god suggestion on a campground not far off the interstate that would be great.

Was wondering if it would be possible to find an inexpensive cabin to rent somewhere between here and there for a night, possibly at a campground, then we wouldn%26#39;t have to unload all of our stuff and set up the camper just for one night. May stay here on the way home too.

If anyone has a campground recommendation of a good campground near Rapid City with things to do and keep the kids busy that would be greatly appreciated.

If there would be a better town other than Rapid City for us to camp that would be more centrally located for us to visit many of the places we plan on seeing such as Mt. Rushmore and other spots feel free to offer your suggestions.

If you change your minds about the camping, I%26#39;d suggest Gull Point State park, on the west shore of Lake Okoboji. You can swim in the lake at the point, and there is a cool old amusement park at Arnold%26#39;s Park if you wanted to do something totally different than the Black Hills.

The rentals in that area tend to be bigger vacation houses, not cabins. The last cabin resort that I know of went away a few years ago.

Thanks but we are camping

This would be for your night in transit, when you said you didn%26#39;t really want to pop up the camper. I can understand the impulse!

There are some old-style cabin resorts that still exist on Okoboji. Fillenwarth Beach is one.

There isn%26#39;t much fun to see or do right on the Interstate, and Okoboji is only 25 miles south of Jackson MN on I-90.

It is an easy drive to the Black Hills from there, even with a trailer.

Arnold%26#39;s Park is 400 miles from Janesville, 440 from Rapid.

Misunderstood your first reply.

Thanks, this sounds perfect if it is a reasonable price.

The campground should be, and it says that half of the spaces are not reservable which is nice.

The swimming beach at Gull Point is pretty crowded on summer saturdays with people who bring their boats over. There are other public access beaches in the area.

For other lodgings, check the towns of Arnold%26#39;s Park, Spirit Lake, and Milford, Iowa.

This website has links to rentals. Fillenwarth is listed under resorts. Others are nice, too.

People take annual vacations there, so it might be hard to get a one night rental, but this year it may be more possible than it was before.

We%26#39;d be there on a Sunday or Monday night so it may be easier to get a reservation than on a weekend.
