is a week too long?

Im planning on flying to mt. rushmore around july from LA. Is a week too long just to see mt. rushmore since im flying and wont have a car?

You are flying where? Closest airport would be Rapid City which is a fair number of miles from Mt. Rushmore (23.2 actually - mostly uphill). Without a car (or walking) that would mean taxi to downtown and meeting up with some sort of tour operator from there. A week is FAR too long for just Mt. Rushmore. A whole day would be a stretch unless you plan to hike the memorial area. Now for the rest of the Black Hills and all the other attractions a week can be about right. But a car would be a must.

Is there any reason why you are not looking to get a car? There%26#39;s so much more to the area than just Mt. Rushmore, and despite the close proximity of attractions compared to other areas, you really do need a car. As Sequim pointed out, Rapid City is roughly 25 miles to Mt. Rushmore. I don%26#39;t think you will find any public transportation that will take people to the attractions either.

If possible, I%26#39;d really rethink not having a car. A week here is simply too long to be without one.

If you can not rent a car, then I would look at a different destination, one that has more public transportation. Most of the Rocky Mountain region has limited public transportation in the more rural areas.

Places to visit in the Black Hills other than Mt Rushmore include Custer State Park, Jewel Cave Nat Mon, Wind Cave Nat Park, Deadwood, Crazy Horse, Hill City and the Badlands.

A car or motorcycle is really the best way to see the Black Hills, but if a rental car will not be part of your plans, there are some options though they may be more costly.

The taxi company publishes its rates for trips around town and to or from various outlying towns at this site www.rapidshuttle.com/outoftownrates.html.

Guided tours of the area can be arranged through this site blackhillsvacations.com/grouptravel/tours/.

There may be other tour companies as well.
