Custer Park

Anyone ever stay in Custer Park at the cabins? I realize public showers and bathrooms. Anyone have thoughts or pictures?? It is cheaper in July and a little rustic and I wouldn%26#39;t have to rent or buy a camper!

Thanks

Custer Park

We%26#39;ve stayed in a cabin at Legion Lake Lodge in Custer but not sure if this is what you%26#39;re talking about or if there are more rustic cabins at the campgrounds? Our cabin had it%26#39;s own bath, AC, and TV and our in-laws even had a kitchen.

Custer Park

First, a little clarification for the readers. There are two types of cabins at Custer State Park.

The cabins that are part of the Custer State Park Resorts system have lots of amenities including bathrooms. These are at Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, the State Game Lodge and Blue Bell. These are more expensive--starting somewhere around $130/night. You book these at www.custerresorts.com.

Then there are the camping cabins at the campgrounds which I believe jdw11Iowa is talking about. These are available at Blue Bell, the State Game Lodge, Stockade Lake and at the French Creek Campground (horse camp only). These cabins have no bathrooms and are typically a one room type setup. I%26#39;m not sure if you bring your own bedding or if they provide it. The rate is $45/night. These cabins are booked at www.campsd.com.

The camping cabins can be thought of as just that--a place a to camp. Except you aren%26#39;t on the ground in a tent. At a difference of $100/night it could make your trip a lot cheaper. The Custer State Park group bath and shower facilities are pretty good from what I%26#39;ve seen.

Yes, it is my understanding that they are like camping. Does anyone know if a family w/ 3 kids (5 persons total) can rent these? If so, where do you put the other kid?

Yes, the $45 a night are the ones I was talking about. Research over the weekend on the state park site, I found a lot of information and pictures of the cabins! It looks like the Blue Bell are newer.

We are going to give it a shot and hope for the best. It will be ';roughing it';, but an experience for all. I will line up hotel 1 night before and 1 night after with pools!

Yes, you must bring linens!

Last thing,

They have cabins there that sleep 5. You just have to look for one that sleeps more.

Thanks

I would love it if those of you who are staying in the camping cabins this summer would post a review when you get back:-). We%26#39;re thinking about South Dakota for our family vacation Summer 2010, and these camping cabins are tempting;-). My kids have never been camping before, and this would be a great way for them to experience it without us having to buy a tent or rent an RV. Plus it%26#39;s a cheap way to say right in the park:-). So I%26#39;ll be interested in hearing any feedback/reviews, especially the cabins that can sleep 5.

I am also trying to decide where to stay: in one of these types of cabins or find a chain hotel that is lower cost. We have three kids and whenever we travel we get a room with two beds and we bring along a ';blow-up'; bed and our own linens for the third kid. The kids usually bring along their own pillows for our road trips anyway.

I haven%26#39;t stayed in the camping cabins but I think you%26#39;d be hard pressed to find a chain hotel with a cheaper nightly rate.
