How busy is the Mt. Rushmore area the middle of July?

WE will be driving to Wi. and would like to spend a little time in the Black Hills on our way. Anyone know if it is usually a busy place that time of year? I%26#39;m guessing it would be. We don%26#39;t want to go and be in traffic jams. So, if anyone can tell us what to expect, I certainly would appreciate it.

Rose,

I%26#39;m not sure what area you are from. I assume you will be coming from the west or south since you will be visiting the Black Hills on the way to WI. I am from the northeast, and the area is nothing like the northeast as far as traffic. It will be a busy time of year for the area, but it is doubtful you will hit any traffic jams. We are used to lots of traffic where we live, and the Black Hills is a treat compared to our area. It%26#39;s also not like the bumper to bumper traffic that can occur in places like Pigeon Forge, TN either.

The Black Hills does get very busy during the Sturgis Bike Rally, but that won%26#39;t be until early August, so you will miss it. I think you will be pleased with your visit all the way around!

Have a great trip.

Thanks for the quick reply!

We are coming from Denver and have never been to the area. We will only be there one day. What would you suggest we see? We don%26#39;t have any kids.

Denver to Black Hills...6 hours. We went a few years ago in mid July and did not have any traffic jams except for in the parking lot at Mt Rushmore.

You can probably see the evening program at Mt Rushmore the night you arrive.

The next day you can see Mt Rushmore by day, drive around parts of Custer State Park and take a tour of either Jewel or Wind Cave.

I like Casa%26#39;s idea of seeing Mt. Rushmore%26#39;s Evening Ceremony the day you arrive and then returning in the a.m. In the a.m., be sure to walk the Presidential Trail out to the Sculptor%26#39;s Studio. This is very enjoyable.

When you visit Custer SP, be sure to drive the Needles Hwy, Iron Mountain Rd, and the Wildlife Loop if time permits. The Blue Bell Lodge within the park serves nice meals, and I have read the State Game Lodge is impressive as well. We have direct experience at the Blue Bell and can recommend it; good food and great service! Another lovely area of the park is Sylvan Lake. You can walk around the lake (very easy trail) and enjoy a picnic.

Depending on how much time you spend at Custer, you may or may not have time to enjoy one of the caves. If you see all the areas I mentioned above, you will probably run out of time, but if you really want to see a cave, (which I do recommend as long as you have no aversions to being underground), you could cut your time short at Custer.

A one day visit is tough; you may find yourself wanting to return again someday. Luckily, you live pretty close by, so a return visit is certainly very possible!

Have a great time!
