wounded knee site

Does anyone know of guided tours

to the wounded knee site, from Rapid City?

Thanks.

Black Hills Adventure Tours claims to have a native American Culture tour that inncludes Wounded Knee.

It is 9 hours long (from Rapid City). From descrptions I%26#39;ve seen there is not a lot there. Memorials to both the 1890 massacre and the 1973 FBi vs. AIM standoff (in which two AIM members were killed), a small museum and a cemetery. The scene is fairly highly politaically charged. It is also very remote in a reservation that incorporates what are reputed to be the two poorest counties in the USA. Very far off the typical tourist itinerary but some people find it a very moving experience.

Thanks.

Gray Line says they can arranged a private tour of wounded knee. Here is what they offer. What do you think.

Depart your Rapid City motel at 9:00 am to Pine Ridge for a stop at the Heritage Center for the Red Cloud Indian Art Show, view Rosary Church and the Historical Mission Building. Travel onto Wounded Knee. Plan on 2 1/2 - 3 hours in the Pine Ridge area. Drive time 2 hours one-way. Quick lunch break (very limited selection or you are welcome to pack a box lunch) in Pine Ridge. Pricing is based on return at 4:00 pm. ($350 plus 5% tax) Gray Line driver to narrate about Black Hills area.

Thank you!

The Red Cloud art show is a good stop.

$350 seems kind of high but if you%26#39;re going to take a guided tour of any of the sites of the area, this is probably the area to do it. I say this because you%26#39;ll more on the tour because sites like Wounded Knee don%26#39;t have a lot of tourist information like places like Mt. Rushmore.

Thanks. Can you give me your opinion about this

itinerary, with suggestions along the way. This is for a 2 week late July trip (with 2 nights) at every stop, except in Rapid City-4 nights. Arrive Bismarck-Medora-Rapid City-Sioux Falls-Fargo-Medora.

We%26#39;re bring 3 teen-agers along.

Sorry.. after Fargo, back to Bismarck (not Medora)

Do you have particular interests in Sioux Falls, Fargo and Bismarck? All three are fine cities but they aren%26#39;t typical traveling destinations if you%26#39;re coming from a long distance. There are certainly things to do there if you%26#39;re interested.

We%26#39;re open to suggestions. We are flying in and

out of Bismarck.

we ';did'; sioux falls, minneapolis, fargo, bismarck, medora, (montana/wyoming), rapid city, sioux falls in september.

sioux falls has a lot going for it imo. nice downtown, historic area worth seeing, the washington pavilion museum also as is the falls park area. zoo is ok. some pretty good restaurants eg. minervas, foleys as well as the usual chains. dont think 2 days is too much.

there seems to be plenty for the kids too:

fargo is purely an overnight stop. we could find nothing going for it apart from an interesting historic area which takes no more than a few hours to see.

bismarck is a lovely city. the area around the capitol is worth visiting, the river area of course and if u r into lewis and clark then fort mandan is worth a visit. hopefully they will have the street market going downtown when u r there. great!

medora was closed when we went thru!!!!!

guess it might be ok during the tourist season but we had expected something pretty special with all the publicity it gets. a disappointment to us. total time there....20 minutes.

rapid city area obviously is a highlight. we stayed in hill city which was nice. 4 days in the black hills will be really enjoyable and should be just enough time to see all the icons. mt rushmore (including the lighting ceremony), crazy horse monument and the needles road (?) we liked.

on the way back to SF be sure to call into mitchell to see the corn palace. wall is a kitchy tourist trap but is worth a stop to absorb the tackiness. the badlands np loop is worth it, better imo than the north dakota badlands area.

the trip invoves a LOT of long interstate driving. the ND legs can become pretty monotonous. am glad we didn%26#39;t have teenagers in the car.

this thread on wounded knee/pine ridge has been running on this forum.

we were tempted to go but general advice was not to. i would seem that you would have to be on some sort of pilgrimage to make it worth while

I went to many of the cities that you are talking about. I liked the Black Hills and spent 2 days there and had plenty to do. I saw the Badlands and spent about 2 hours there, doing a couple of the hikes and listening to a ranger talk. I went to Medora in September. Medora is a nice little town, although I was disappointed in the food there. Lodging in Medora can be expensive. I stayed at Custer%26#39;s Cottages which was very reasonable. Medora has some nice shops, but it is a little town and you can see most of it in a few hours. The town is very quaint. Theodore Roosevelt Park is quiet, scenic, and uncrowded. I didn%26#39;t see the Chateau or the Musical that was there, but I imagine that would be nice to see. I did not see Wounded Knee, but I saw the Lakota museum in Chamberlain, SD. The art was very good there. I did stop at Wall Drug as well as stopped at the Corn Palace. They are good for brief stops, but I did enjoy Wall Drug, even though it may be a tourist trap.

Thanks so much for the VERY useful info. We%26#39;re

looking forward to our trip!
