Trip to Mt. Rushmore in March

We are planning to drive from Texas to Mt. Rushmore the first week of March 2009. My concern is the weather and driving conditions. Even if the weather is bad, are the roads usually driveable?

Not necesasarily. The beginning of March may be pretty nice in Texas, but it is still the end of winter in the northern plains. You could have beautiful days, sunny, warm breeze....or you could get into a 3 day blizzard with temperatures below zero. Since it isn%26#39;t tourist season yet, not all places will be open yet either. If possible, you should delay your trip another month or even 2.

If the only reason for your trip is to visit Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills, you should consider delaying it until a warmer time like. While Mt. Rushmore is open, some of the other things in the area are not. The Needles Highway, for example, opens in mid-April.

If March is your only opportunity, you will likely have a successful trip. Yes, there could be a storm and you could get delayed somewhere for a day or two, but people drive the highways on the plains all winter long. You%26#39;ll want to bring a sleeping bag, shovel, some emergency items like food and a cell phone (but don%26#39;t count it working when you really need it).

Thanks for the info. We will check the weather before heading up there. We need a Spring Break destination, so if the forecast is bad, we%26#39;ll change our plans and head to the coast! Your post was very helpful! Mak
